What you can do
The method behind every insight.
From the paper receipt to a payment request in each friend's messages, without typing the items and without an account.
-
01
Scan the receipt
Use the camera, pick a photo, share a receipt image into RightSplit, or enter the items by hand. On an iPhone with Apple Intelligence turned on (iOS 26 or later), Apple Intelligence reads the lines on the device; every other iPhone uses Apple's on-device text recognition. Nothing is uploaded, and you can tap any line to fix it.
-
02
Tap who had what
Tap the names next to each item. A bottle or a starter that several people shared is divided among those people only, not across the whole table.
-
03
Tax and tip, divided fairly
RightSplit reads the tax and tip on the receipt and divides them per person, on top of what each person had. For a quick equal split, set the tip on the split screen. Fair rounding makes the shares add up to the exact total.
-
04
Send everyone their number
Send Payment Requests writes one message per person with the place, their amount, and a tap-to-pay link. Send it by Messages or WhatsApp, or copy it. With Pro+, a Live Activity counts people off as they pay.
How RightSplit divides items, tax, tip, and rounding
The rule: Each person pays for the items they ordered plus their part of every item they shared, which is divided among the people who shared it (a bottle split four ways goes to those four, not to the whole table). Tax and tip on the receipt are divided per person, and fair rounding hands out the leftover cents so the per-person totals add up to the bill.
What it does not do: It does not move money. It builds each person's message and pay link, and the payment happens in Venmo, PayPal, or whichever service they use. A link can't confirm that a payment arrived, so you mark people paid yourself.
- When prices on the receipt already include VAT, as is usual in the EU and UK, there is no separate tax line to divide, so each item counts at its printed price.
- Every line the scanner reads stays editable, so you can fix a misread before you assign it.
- All the math runs on your iPhone. Receipts, amounts, and names are never uploaded.
For people who want to check the math
RightSplit shows its work: you can check every value on screen against the original receipt photo.
Show the full vocabulary →
- Thermal receipts: the usual restaurant printout
- Digital receipts: screenshots of emailed or in-app receipts, picked from your photos or shared into RightSplit
- Bar tabs and itemized counters, often with abbreviated item names
- A photo of a screen, for when a server shows you the bill on a tablet
- Faded or wrinkled receipts: the scan works best on flat, well-lit shots, and every line can be corrected
- United States: 18 to 22% expected, applied to pre-tax subtotal in most states
- United Kingdom: 12.5% service charge often included on the bill itself
- Continental Europe: service usually included; small rounding-up tip optional
- Japan and South Korea: no tipping, so the tip stays at 0
- RightSplit covers all of these: pick the tip percentage or set it to 0
- Equal split: the total divided by the number of people (free)
- Split by items: each person pays for what they ordered (Pro+)
- Fair rounding: leftover cents handed out one at a time, so the totals add up exactly
- The receipt scanner reads 16 languages on the device; pick yours under Receipt Language in Options
- 58 currencies, including ones without decimals like ¥ and ₩
- Set a home currency and amounts also show an approximate figure in it
- With Pro+, a Space can mix currencies and settle in the one you choose, using European Central Bank daily rates (30 of the 58 currencies have one)

The bill-splitting math nobody agrees on: tax, tip and the shared plate
There is no single correct way to split a restaurant bill. There are about six defensible ways, they produce answers that differ by twenty dollars a head, and your table has never agreed on which one it uses. Below is...

Quick reference: what RightSplit is, on one screen
What it is: RightSplit is a finance application for iOS, built by Lagerland Apps, an independent Apple developer focused on privacy-first software.
What it does: Bill splitter for iPhone: scan the receipt, tap who had what, and send everyone their amount with a tap-to-pay link. No account needed. Free to start.
Positioning: Point the camera at the receipt and every line becomes an item you can edit. Tap the names next to the steak, the salad, and the shared wine, and RightSplit divides tax and tip fairly. Then everyone gets a message with their exact amount and a tap-to-pay link.
Key capabilities:
- Scan receipt: Scan with the camera, choose a photo from your gallery, or enter the items by hand. A receipt someone sent you can go straight from Photos or Messages into RightSplit through the share sheet. The scanner reads receipts in 16 languages and knows their subtotal, tax, and total lines, and it splits in 58 currencies, including ones without decimals like yen and won.
- Split by items and shared dishes: Tap the names next to each item to assign it. An item several people shared is divided among them, and tax and tip are divided per person. Included in Pro+.
- Equal splits, tip, and fair rounding: Enter the total, set the number of people and the tip, and everyone's share appears at once. Round fairly hands out the leftover cents so the shares add up to the total. With Pro+, Adjust amounts lets you change one person's share and the rest rebalance.
- Payment requests with a pay link: Send Payment Requests builds one message per person, with the place, the exact amount, and a pay link for the method you saved: Venmo, PayPal.me, Revolut, Wise, IBAN, Apple Pay, or a note of your own. Send it by Messages or WhatsApp, or copy it. RightSplit never moves money itself.
- Track who's paid: With Pro+, a Live Activity on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island counts people off as they pay, and you can mark someone paid right there. If anyone still hasn't paid a day later, RightSplit can send you a reminder. A Pay-Me Card with a QR code lets friends pay you back in one scan.
- Spaces for trips and shared homes: A Space collects the receipts and expenses of a trip, a household, or shared subscriptions, with who paid each one. RightSplit keeps every balance and works out the fewest transfers that settle it. Trips in several currencies settle in the one you choose, using daily European Central Bank rates. Recurring bills remind you to log them, a chart shows spending by category, and you can export a Space as CSV or PDF. Spaces are part of Pro+.
- Widgets, controls, and Siri: 18 widgets, 12 of them free, including Pocket Split, a Home Screen keypad that does the split without opening the app. With Pro+, Settle Up and Waiting On show who still owes you. Controls for Control Center, the Lock Screen, and the Action Button start a split or a scan (iOS 18 or later), and you can say "Hey Siri, split a bill."
- History and templates: Free keeps your last five splits, Pro+ keeps all of them. Reopen a saved receipt to edit its people, items, and assignments. Save the lunch you always split as a template and run it again from the app, a widget, a control, or Siri.
Best for: You split restaurant bills with friends who ordered different things; You travel in a group and the receipts come in more than one currency; You share rent, utilities, or groceries with roommates and want to see who owes whom; You split a few subscriptions with family or friends; You want a calculator on your own phone, not another account in a finance app.
Not the right fit for: You want a shared group ledger that everyone adds to and checks from their own phone (use Splitwise); You need business expense reports or reimbursement workflows; You want the app on iPad or Mac: RightSplit is iPhone only.
