Looking for a
Time Out alternative?

Time Out: App Lock and Blocker brought "exercise to unlock" to the App Store before EarnLock did. EarnLock shares the idea and builds it differently. Halfway to your goal your apps open for an hour, the full goal opens them until midnight, and the first week is a Shadow Week that only counts. Premium adds an Apple Watch app and comes monthly, yearly, or as a one-time $19.99 purchase.

When should I pick Time Out instead?

Pick Time Out if any of these matter more to you than the halfway hour, Shadow Week, and the Apple Watch app:

EarnLock is for the person who likes exercise-to-unlock and wants a slow day to still earn an hour, a week of counting before the first lock, and a one-time purchase option.

About EarnLock

Questions

FAQ

What is the best alternative to Time Out: App Lock and Blocker?
EarnLock shares Time Out's exercise-to-unlock idea and builds it around one daily goal from Apple Health. Halfway opens your apps for an hour, and the full goal opens them until midnight. It starts with a Shadow Week that blocks nothing, adds an Apple Watch app with Premium, and offers a one-time Lifetime purchase alongside monthly and yearly Premium. Locking one app with a step goal is free for good.
How is EarnLock different from Time Out?
Both lock apps until you exercise. EarnLock adds a partial unlock (an hour at halfway), a Shadow Week that counts how often you would have been blocked before anything is locked, and a screen on each locked app that shows what's left, such as "2,026 steps until unlock". It has an Apple Watch app with Premium and comes in 39 locales. Time Out supports workout-based goals and Vision Pro.
How much does EarnLock cost compared with Time Out?
Locking one app or category with a step goal is free for good, with partial and full unlocks, Shadow Week, streaks with a weekly rest day, the Insights Day view, every widget, and the emergency unlock. Premium adds unlimited apps, active minutes and active calories, the Apple Watch app, a Live Activity, Smart Schedules, and Week and Month insights for $1.99/month or $9.99/year, each with a 7-day free trial, or $19.99 once. All three support Family Sharing. Time Out's listing showed subscriptions only when this page was checked: $1.99 a week, $3.99 to $5.99 a month, or $34.99 to $39.99 a year. Check both listings for current prices in your country.
Does Time Out support Apple Watch?
Time Out's App Store listing shows iPhone and Apple Vision Pro, with no Apple Watch app. With Premium, EarnLock's Apple Watch app reads its own Health data and shows your ring, your count, and how far you are from unlocking, with a Reflect button and circular, corner, inline, and rectangular complications. The iPhone is still the device that locks and unlocks your apps, and it passes your Premium status to the watch.
Which is more private, EarnLock or Time Out?
Time Out's App Privacy label lists Usage Data and Diagnostics as collected but not linked to you. EarnLock has no account, makes no network connections of its own, and includes no third-party SDKs. Apple Health is read on your iPhone and never written to or sent anywhere.
Can EarnLock block the same apps Time Out can?
Yes. Both use Apple's Screen Time controls, so you choose apps or whole categories in the same iOS picker. EarnLock's free tier locks one app or category, and Premium has no limit.
