A Good Sudoku alternative
for when you want a new kind of grid.

Good Sudoku is the sudoku app for people who want to get better at sudoku. Its makers wrote the puzzle generator and solver from scratch: the solver runs while you play, reads your answers and notes, and points you to the next technique you need, and every difficulty level is defined by the techniques it requires. Tare asks for the same kind of reasoning toward one correct answer, on a different board. Each of its 200 levels is a painted hanging mobile. You place weights until every beam balances, and some weights hide behind a “?” that only picture-card clues can resolve.

How does Tare compare to Good Sudoku?

Both are one-answer logic puzzles. Good Sudoku is the classic with a teacher built in; Tare puts a new rule on a hanging mobile.

The puzzle
Tare: A hanging mobile. Drag weights onto hooks either side of each pivot until every beam balances: weight × distance equal on both sides, with a nested beam pulling its whole load at the hook it hangs from.

Good Sudoku: Classic sudoku, from a puzzle generator its makers wrote themselves. Custom mode lets you put in a puzzle from elsewhere, such as a paper puzzle you're stuck on, then play it and share it with friends.
The deduction
Tare: Some weights hide in a “?” bubble, and a beam carrying an unsolved “?” will not settle, so the scale won't tell you the value. Small picture cards above the board show how the pieces compare, and you deduce it from them.

Good Sudoku: Pure sudoku logic. Each difficulty is defined by the solving techniques it needs, up to advanced ones such as XYZ-Wings, Jellyfish and Swordfish, and you can practise each technique on its own.
Help when you're stuck
Tare: Optional hints, off until you switch them on, each showing where the next piece goes. Asking for one costs that level's third star.

Good Sudoku: Its best feature is AI-powered hints that run the solver as you play, work out what you already know from your answers and notes, and show you the next technique. Optional tools handle the counting busywork.
How much there is
Tare: 200 handcrafted levels in ten chapters of 20, each machine-checked to have exactly one answer, with every hidden value fixed by the cards alone and decoys that fit nowhere.

Good Sudoku: More than 70,000 puzzles, three standard modes (Good, Arcade and Eternal), three daily puzzle modes that get harder through the week, and Custom mode.
Pace and competition
Tare: No timer, lives, leaderboards or Game Center. You earn up to three stars per level, and stars never lock anything.

Good Sudoku: Daily modes with global leaderboards, Game Center, and an Arcade mode with hearts.
Price, privacy and platforms
Tare: Free download with 20 levels free for good, then $2.99 once for the other 180, with Family Sharing. No ads; Data Not Collected. iPhone and iPad.

Good Sudoku: Free with ads, plus a $4.99 Full Game Unlock; Good Sudoku+ is the Apple Arcade edition. The free app's label lists data not linked to you, including data used for third-party advertising; its release notes say it defaults to no tracking. iPhone, iPad and Apple silicon Macs, with iCloud sync.

About Tare

Questions

FAQ

What is a good alternative to Good Sudoku?
If you want more sudoku, Good Sudoku+ is the Apple Arcade edition of the same game. If you want a different one-answer logic puzzle, Tare is a wordless balance puzzle for iPhone and iPad: you place weights on a hanging mobile until every beam balances, and deduce hidden weights from picture cards. Each of its 200 handcrafted levels is machine-checked to have exactly one answer. The first 20 levels are free, one $2.99 purchase unlocks the rest, and there are no ads.
How is Tare different from sudoku?
Sudoku asks you to place digits so each appears once per row, column and box. Tare asks you to hang weights on hooks so that every beam on a mobile balances at the same time: weight times distance from the pivot must be equal on both sides, and a beam hanging from another beam pulls with everything below it. Some weights are hidden, and a beam carrying a hidden weight will not settle until you know it, so you deduce the value from picture cards. The logic feels familiar, on a board you haven't seen.
Is Good Sudoku free?
Good Sudoku by Zach Gage is a free download with ads and a $4.99 Full Game Unlock in-app purchase. Good Sudoku+ is the Apple Arcade edition, included with an Arcade subscription. Tare is a free download whose first 20 levels stay free; one $2.99 purchase unlocks the other 180, with Family Sharing, and there are no ads in either part.
Does every Tare level have exactly one solution?
Yes. Every level is built by hand and then checked by machine before it ships: it must have exactly one arrangement that balances, every hidden weight must be determined by its picture cards alone, and any decoy weight must fit no balanced arrangement at all. A well-made sudoku makes the same promise: you can always reason the answer out without guessing.
Do I need to be good at math to play Tare?
No more than sudoku needs you to be good at counting. The arithmetic is small: a weight times its distance from the pivot, plus adding up the load that hangs below a nested beam. The hard part is the deduction, and there is no timer.
Do Good Sudoku and Tare collect any data?
Tare's App Store label is Data Not Collected. It has no account, ads, analytics, or third-party SDKs, and it opens no network connections of its own. Its privacy policy has the detail. Good Sudoku's label is Data Not Linked to You and lists contact info, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics, including data used for third-party advertising; its release notes say it defaults to no tracking. Good Sudoku+ lists contact info linked to you, and identifiers and usage data not linked to you. Labels are self-reported and can change.
